OpenClaw Foundation¶
Governance body for openclaw, being set up by peter-steinberger + Dave in 2026. Modeled explicitly on ghostty's foundation structure (mitchell-hashimoto connection).
Purpose¶
- Provide a neutral governance vehicle — "like Switzerland" — so no single corporate contributor (OpenAI, Nvidia, Microsoft, Tencent, ByteDance) can be seen to own the project.
- Fund full-time maintainers, freeing Peter's time from triage/coordination.
- Prevent the narrative that OpenAI "bought OpenClaw" when Peter joined — by ensuring the project's IP and direction live outside OpenAI.
Status (as of talk, 2026-04-17)¶
- Almost operational.
- Blocked on US banking system setup — Peter notes it's "slow and very confused when you're not American."
Corporate contributors¶
- Nvidia — engineers dedicated to hardening the codebase, Nemo-Claw sandbox integration (which Peter promptly broke in half an hour).
- Microsoft — Windows app + MS Teams plug-in.
- Red Hat — security + Dockerization.
- Tencent, ByteDance — Chinese user base is larger than any other continent; direct model-maker contribution.
- Salesforce, Slack, Telegram — integration maintainers.
- OpenAI — explicitly limits its contribution footprint so the project doesn't look captured.
Strategic meaning¶
The Foundation is the governance answer to "will OpenClaw stay open now that you joined OpenAI?" — structurally guarantees no single-company capture even if the BDFL changes employers.
